What is steel plate?
Steel plate is the flat, heavy-gauge counterpart to sheet and coil: once flat-rolled stock reaches 3 mm thickness and above, it is sold as plate rather than sheet or coil. Below 3 mm the same base metal becomes sheet or coil instead, as explained on our sheet versus plate versus coil guide. Stainless steel plate is typically hot-rolled and then solution-annealed, leaving a No.1 or HRAP (hot-rolled, annealed and pickled) finish that is dull and slightly textured, ready for cutting, forming and welding without extra surface prep. We supply steel plate cut-to-length to the dimensions a buyer needs rather than only standard mill sizes. As an ISO 9001:2015 certified (Certificate No. 1283438) stockist and supplier based in Mumbai, operating since 2003, Nandini Steel holds plate ex-stock across stainless, nickel-alloy and carbon PVQ grades for immediate dispatch, shipped with an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate.
Steel plate grades and materials we stock
Our steel plate stock spans three families, picked for different corrosion and pressure duties. In stainless, 304 plate and 304L plate cover general fabrication, architectural and food-grade work, while 316 plate and 316L plate add molybdenum for chloride-bearing and marine environments. Where sulfuric acid or heavy chloride exposure goes beyond what 316L can handle, 904L plate takes over with its copper-bearing, super-austenitic chemistry, an SS plate grade on which our ISO scope specifically lists Nandini Steel as a certified stockist. For sour service and mixed oxidizing-reducing acid duty we stock nickel-alloy plate, including Incoloy 825 plate and Inconel 625 plate. On the pressure-vessel side, A516 Gr 70 plate is our core PVQ carbon steel, available as standard plate, normalized plate for low-temperature impact service, or NACE HIC-tested plate for sour vessels, alongside A516 Gr 60 plate for lighter tankage.
Steel plate thickness and size range
| Dimension | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 3 mm to 100 mm and above | Below 3 mm is classed as sheet, not plate |
| Width | Up to 2500 mm | Wide-plate availability varies by grade and heat |
| Length | Cut-to-length | Supplied against the length specified on the RFQ |
| Cutoff point | 3 mm | Industry boundary between plate and sheet/coil |
Our plate thickness guide and plate weight calculation guide help confirm the right thickness and weight before you raise an RFQ.
Steel plate standards
Stainless steel plate from our stock conforms to ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240, the governing specifications for 304, 316 and 904L plate. Carbon PVQ plate such as A516 Gr 70 conforms to ASTM A516 and ASME SA-516, with ASTM A20 covering the general requirements for pressure-vessel plate ordering, testing and marking. Nickel-alloy plate conforms to ASTM B424 and ASTM B443. Every plate shipment is backed by an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate, and buyers can review how we verify each heat on our quality assurance and certifications pages.
Steel plate applications
Steel plate from our stock goes into pressure vessels and boilers, storage tanks, structural fabrication, and acid-handling equipment in fertilizer and acid-regeneration plants and wider chemical processing duty. Grade selection follows the corrosion mechanism in play: 304 and 316 for general and chloride-adjacent fabrication, 904L for sulfuric-acid and high-chloride service, nickel alloys for sour or mixed-acid duty, and A516 Gr 70 where the requirement is pressure-vessel plate rather than corrosion resistance.
How we quote steel plate
Steel plate pricing is RFQ-only; we do not publish price tables because plate pricing moves with the base metal market and the specific heat allocated to an order. Send us the grade, thickness, width, length and quantity, and we build the quote from a base price, a nickel and molybdenum alloy surcharge where the grade carries those elements, thickness and width extras for non-standard sizing, and a quantity-based adjustment. Quotes go out the same day the RFQ is received. We ship steel plate to more than 36 countries, so an export quote also factors in packing and documentation for the destination.
