Stainless steel plate grades: 304, 304L, 316, 316L and 904L
Stainless steel plate from Nandini Steel is stocked across five core grades, each suited to a different corrosion duty and budget. We hold SS 304 plate and 304L plate for general fabrication and dry or indoor environments, SS 316 plate and 316L plate wherever chlorides or marine air are present, and 904L plate for sulfuric-acid and high-chloride process duty that would overwhelm standard 316. All five are ex-stock in Mumbai for immediate dispatch, with genuine mill material and EN 10204 3.1/3.2 mill test certificates on every order.
304 and 304L plate cover the bulk of structural and equipment fabrication where the environment is not aggressively corrosive. 316 and 316L plate add 2 to 3 percent molybdenum over 304, which is the difference that lets stainless steel plate resist pitting in coastal, chemical and marine-adjacent service. 904L plate is a super-austenitic grade with roughly 4.5 percent molybdenum and around 1.5 percent copper, built specifically for sulfuric acid plants and severe chloride duty where even 316L would fail early. Our 904L plate is part of the specialty scope on our ISO 9001:2015 certification (Cert No. 1283438), alongside Incoloy 825 plate.
SS plate thickness and sizes
Stainless steel plate is available ex-stock from 3 mm up to 100 mm thickness, in standard mill widths, with heavier sections cut to size on request. The table below lists the ranges we hold across 304, 316 and 904L plate.
| Thickness range | Standard widths | Typical grades |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm to 6 mm | 1250 mm, 1500 mm, 2000 mm | 304, 304L, 316, 316L |
| 6 mm to 25 mm | 1500 mm, 2000 mm, 2500 mm | 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 904L |
| 25 mm to 50 mm | 2000 mm, 2500 mm | 316, 316L, 904L |
| 50 mm to 100 mm | 2000 mm, 2500 mm | 316, 904L (on request) |
Lengths run to 6000 mm and beyond on most grades. Share your drawing or bill of material and we will confirm the nearest ex-stock size or custom cut-to-size option same day.
ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240 compliance
Every stainless steel plate we supply conforms to ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240, the governing specifications for chromium and chromium-nickel plate used in pressure vessels and general corrosion-resistant construction. These standards set the chemical composition, tensile and yield strength, elongation and bend requirements that 304, 304L, 316, 316L and 904L plate must meet. ASTM A480 covers the general requirements, tolerances and finish definitions shared across sheet, plate and strip, so inspectors read A240 and A480 together. We issue EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 mill test certificates traceable to heat number on every plate dispatch, so the paperwork matches the metallurgy on the mill certificate.
Hot-rolled (No.1 HRAP) vs cold-rolled plate finishes
Most stainless steel plate above 6 mm thickness is supplied hot-rolled, annealed and pickled, commonly called the No.1 or HRAP finish, which has a dull, slightly textured gray surface suited to structural and process equipment where appearance is secondary to strength. Thinner plate, generally under 6 mm, can be supplied cold-rolled with a smoother 2B or brighter finish when the application calls for closer dimensional tolerance or a cleaner surface before further fabrication. Nandini Steel stocks No.1 HRAP as the default plate finish and can source cold-rolled plate against a confirmed order.
Stainless steel plate applications
Stainless steel plate is the backbone material for pressure vessels, storage tanks, heat exchangers and process piping skids across oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical processing plants, where 316 and 904L plate handle the corrosive media and 304 plate forms the structural shell. In pharmaceutical and food and dairy processing, 304 and 316L plate build tanks, hoppers and platforms that need a cleanable, corrosion-resistant surface. Marine structures, pulp and paper equipment and general fabrication shops also draw heavily on SS plate, with 904L reserved for the toughest sulfuric-acid and high-chloride duty.
SS plate price: how our RFQ works
We do not publish a stainless steel plate price list because the real cost depends on too many moving parts to quote accurately off a chart. The price is built from a base value for the grade, a nickel and molybdenum alloy surcharge that moves with the LME and nickel market, extras for thickness and width outside standard ranges, and a quantity break. Send us your grade, thickness, size and quantity through an RFQ and our team quotes same day with a firm, delivered number, not a range.
