Hastelloy C276 at a glance

  • Designation: UNS N10276 goes by the trade name Alloy C-276, or Werkstoff 2.4819 in European notation. It's a nickel-base Ni-Mo-Cr alloy, part of Nandini's nickel alloys range.
  • Chemistry drivers: Nickel carries the balance, with roughly ~15–17% molybdenum, ~14.5–16.5% chromium and ~3–4.5% tungsten worked in. Carbon stays capped at ≤0.01%.
  • Corrosion rating: PREN climbs past 68 here, well clear of the stainless ladder. 304 sits near 18, 316 around 24, 904L about 34, and super-duplex 2507 roughly 43. C276 leaves every one of them behind.
  • Service window: It stands up to wet chlorine, hypochlorite, ferric and cupric chlorides, plus hot contaminated acids of both the reducing and oxidising kind.
  • Standard & forms: Solution-annealed to ASTM B575, it's supplied as plate, sheet, pipe, round bar, flanges and fittings.

Chemical composition

Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276) is a nickel-base alloy. Its combined molybdenum and tungsten content gives it strong resistance to crevice attack and reducing acids. The carbon stays very low, at or below 0.01%, which means the alloy keeps its corrosion resistance even as-welded. No post-weld solution anneal needed.

Physical properties

Density of 8.89 g/cm³ drives plate weight, and it's heavier than austenitic stainless. Account for that when calculating delivered tonnage and support loads.

Corrosion behavior

C276 is the Ni-Mo-Cr workhorse you reach for when a medium mixes oxidising and reducing acids with chlorides and nothing cheaper holds up. Roughly 16% molybdenum and 3.5% tungsten give it outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The nickel matrix, meanwhile, makes it nearly immune to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, the failure mode that limits austenitic stainless grades. A PREN above 68 lets it stand up to wet chlorine, hypochlorite, ferric and cupric chlorides, and hot contaminated sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Carbon content is kept very low, so it stays resistant to intergranular corrosion even as-welded. When oxidising acid resistance needs to go further still, Hastelloy C22 is the closest sibling worth weighing against Hastelloy.

Available forms, sizes and standards

C276 comes in both flat and long products, each made to its governing ASTM/ASME standard. Every form sits ex-stock, ready for immediate dispatch. Plate thickness, pipe sizes and schedules, and bar diameters that aren't on the shelf get sourced against firm order. Welding calls for matching filler ERNiCrMo-4 (FM C-276).

Applications

C276 earns its cost in the environments that defeat stainless and even super-austenitics:

  • Flue-gas desulfurization (FGD): scrubbers, ducts and liners see condensing acids plus chlorides, C276's combined oxidising/reducing resistance is why it is the default liner alloy.
  • Chemical and acid processing: reactors, heat exchangers and columns handling hot contaminated sulfuric and hydrochloric acids rely on the Mo+W chemistry to resist both general attack and localized corrosion.
  • Oil and gas and pulp & paper: sour well components and chlorine-dioxide bleaching equipment use C276 for its chloride-SCC immunity and hypochlorite resistance.

How C276 compares

Within the nickel corrosion-alloy ladder, step up to Hastelloy C22 when oxidising acids and localized corrosion dominate, since its higher chromium and lower tungsten edge out C276 in strongly oxidising media. Inconel 625 offers higher strength with niobium strengthening but trades some reducing-acid resistance. Where the duty is sulfuric-acid-dominated rather than mixed, the copper-bearing Alloy 20 is often the economical choice before a full Ni-Mo-Cr alloy is warranted. Sibling Hastelloy C2000 and Hastelloy X cover copper-modified and high-temperature variants respectively.

Testing, MTC and how to order

Every C276 order comes with an EN 10204 3.1/3.2 mill test certificate (MTC), giving heat and cast traceability back to genuine mill plate from producers such as Aperam, Outokumpu, Jindal, POSCO, Nippon Steel and JFE. Positive material identification (PMI) confirms the molybdenum and tungsten content. Intergranular-corrosion testing per ASTM A262 can be furnished on request, if that's needed. FAQ

What is Hastelloy C276 used for?
Hastelloy C276 earns its keep anywhere oxidising and reducing acids mix with chlorides: flue-gas desulfurization scrubbers, reactors and exchangers in chemical and acid processing, sour oil-and-gas components, pulp-and-paper bleaching equipment. With a PREN above 68 and immunity to chloride-SCC, it's the material you reach for once stainless and super-austenitic grades have hit their ceiling.
What is the difference between Hastelloy C276 and C22?
Both are Ni-Mo-Cr alloys, but C22 carries more chromium and less tungsten, which gives it the edge in strongly oxidising acids and against localized corrosion. C276 runs slightly higher in molybdenum and tungsten, and that's what makes it the better choice for reducing acids and the widest range of mixed media. For most general wet-chlorine and mixed-acid work, C276 is the one specified. When oxidising conditions take over, step up to C22.
Is Hastelloy C276 the same as Inconel 625?
No. Both are nickel-base corrosion alloys, but C276 (N10276) is a Ni-Mo-Cr alloy built for mixed oxidising and reducing acids plus chlorides. Inconel 625 (N06625), by contrast, adds niobium for higher strength and better performance at high temperature. C276 holds the edge in reducing acids and chloride-crevice resistance. On raw mechanical strength, 625 wins.
What standard and certification does Nandini supply C276 to?
C276 plate and sheet come solution-annealed to ASTM B575, with bar to B574, pipe to B622/B619, and fittings and flanges to B564/B366. Every order ships with an EN 10204 3.1/3.2 mill test certificate carrying full heat traceability; PMI and ASTM A262 intergranular-corrosion testing can be arranged on request.
