ASTM A403 Wrought Austenitic Stainless Buttweld Fittings

ASTM A403 is the specification for wrought austenitic stainless steel buttweld fittings, covering elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends for pressurized piping. It defines grade chemistry, manufacturing classes such as WP-S and WP-WX, heat treatment and testing, while dimensions follow ASME B16.9.

What ASTM A403 covers

ASTM A403/A403M applies to wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings made for use in pressure piping and pressure vessel service. The fittings are produced from plate, pipe, forgings or bar, then formed into the finished shape. The specification fixes the chemical composition of each grade, the required heat treatment, mechanical properties, nondestructive examination and marking. It does not set the laying dimensions, those come from the matching dimensional standard, most commonly ASME B16.9 for factory-made buttweld fittings.

A buttweld fitting is welded directly into the line so its bore matches the connecting pipe, giving a smooth full-penetration joint with low turbulence and good fatigue life. For that reason A403 fittings are almost always paired with austenitic stainless pipe ordered to ASTM A312, so the fitting and the pipe share the same grade and wall schedule.

Grade designations: WP plus the alloy

Under A403 the grade marking starts with "WP" (wrought product) followed by the alloy number. So WP304 is wrought 304, WP316L is wrought 316L, and so on. The common austenitic grades covered include 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 310 and the super-austenitic 904L. Each grade keeps the metallurgy of its parent flat product, which is specified for plate and sheet under ASTM A240.

A403 gradeFamilyPREN (approx.)Why it is chosen
WP304 / WP304LAustenitic stainless~18General service; the low-carbon 304L (C ≤ 0.03%) resists sensitization in welded assemblies
WP316 / WP316LAustenitic stainless~242–3% molybdenum adds pitting resistance that 304 lacks; 316L for welded hygienic work
WP321 / WP347Stabilized austenitic~24Titanium or niobium stabilization resists intergranular attack at elevated temperature
WP904LSuper-austenitic (UNS N08904, 1.4539)~34~4.5% Mo and ~1.5% Cu for sulfuric acid and chloride pitting resistance

The "L" grades carry a maximum carbon of 0.03%, which keeps chromium carbides from precipitating at the grain boundaries during welding. That is the practical reason to specify 304L or 316L for fabricated fittings rather than the standard-carbon grade. You can read the mechanism in detail on our intergranular corrosion and sensitization page.

A403 manufacturing classes

A403 separates fittings by how they are made and examined. The class suffix tells you whether the fitting is seamless or welded, and how the weld was inspected. This directly affects the weld joint efficiency used in pressure design.

ClassConstructionExaminationWeld joint factor
WP-SSeamlessNo weld seam to examine1.00
WP-WWeldedSpot radiography not required0.85
WP-WXWelded100% radiographic examination1.00
WP-WUWelded100% ultrasonic examination1.00
CRCold-formed weldedAs agreedPer class CR limits

When full line efficiency matters, specify WP-S, WP-WX or WP-WU rather than WP-W. State the class on the purchase order, not just the grade, so the fitting is supplied and radiographed in the condition your piping code assumes.

Heat treatment and testing

A403 austenitic fittings are supplied in the solution-annealed condition unless another state is agreed. Solution annealing dissolves carbides back into the matrix and restores corrosion resistance after forming and welding. Where intergranular attack is a concern, the order can call for corrosion testing to ASTM A262 to confirm the material is not sensitized.

Every order from Nandini Steel ships with an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate that records the heat chemistry, mechanical results and heat treatment, so the fittings are fully traceable to the heat. See how to read a mill test certificate for a walk-through of what each section means.

ASTM A403 sits in a family of fitting and pipe specifications. The table below places it alongside the standards most often quoted on the same line.

Selecting the grade for your service

Grade choice follows the corrosion duty, not habit. For dry indoor or mild service, WP304L is usually enough. Where chlorides are present, the molybdenum in 316/316L earns its cost, and you can compare the two on 304L vs 316L. For hot concentrated chlorides or sulfuric acid, step up to 904L, whose copper-bearing chemistry resists conditions that pit 316L. The underlying ranking is explained in our PREN and pitting resistance guide.

Because the fitting is welded in place, filler and procedure matter as much as the base grade. See how to weld 316L and how to prevent sensitization when planning fabrication. A403 fittings feed directly into our stainless steel pipe fittings range and serve duties across chemical processing, oil and gas and pharmaceutical plant.

FAQ

What is the difference between ASTM A403 and ASME B16.9?
ASTM A403 is the material specification. It defines the grade chemistry, heat treatment, mechanical properties and testing of wrought austenitic stainless buttweld fittings. ASME B16.9 is the dimensional standard that sets the sizes, wall thicknesses and tolerances. A fitting is normally ordered to both, A403 for the metal and B16.9 for the geometry.
What does the WP prefix mean in A403 grades?
WP stands for "wrought product." It is placed before the alloy number, so WP316L is a wrought 316L fitting and WP304 is a wrought 304 fitting. The suffix after the grade, such as WP-S or WP-WX, indicates whether the fitting is seamless or welded and how the weld was examined.
Is A403 the same as A312?
No. ASTM A312 covers austenitic stainless pipe, while ASTM A403 covers the buttweld fittings welded into that pipe. They are companion standards and are usually ordered in the same grade so the fitting and pipe match in chemistry and wall schedule.
Which A403 grade resists chlorides best?
Among the common grades, resistance rises with the pitting resistance equivalent number: 304 (~18), 316 (~24), then 904L (~34). For chloride-bearing or sulfuric-acid duty, WP316L is the usual stainless choice and WP904L is the step up when 316L is not enough.
Do A403 fittings come with a mill test certificate?
Yes. Every order from Nandini Steel includes an EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate recording the heat chemistry, mechanical properties and heat treatment, giving full traceability back to the heat.
