Rockstar 400 at a Glance
- AR400 class, ~400 HBW nominal surface hardness (typically 370–430 HBW ≈ 38–45 HRC).
- Quenched & tempered (Q&T) martensitic low-alloy steel, hardness through the section, not a hard coating.
- Weldable and cold-formable with the right preheat and bend radius, which means liners, bodies and chutes can be fabricated right in the field.
- Supplied as plate only, ex-stock for immediate dispatch, cut from genuine mill plate.
- EN 10204 3.1/3.2 mill test certificate comes standard with every order, built to handle wear duty in mining, crushing and bulk-handling work.
What Is Rockstar 400 Abrasion-Resistant Plate?
Rockstar 400 is a quenched-and-tempered low-alloy wear steel classified by its nominal surface hardness of roughly 400 Brinell, the convention used across the AR400 (abrasion-resistant 400) class. It is not a corrosion-resistant alloy and is not selected on a PREN basis; it is selected on hardness and wear life. The plate is hardened by quenching to a martensitic structure and tempered to retain toughness, giving it the ability to resist abrasive and moderate impact wear while remaining practical to cut, weld and bend. Rockstar 400 sits in the broader abrasion-resistant plates family as the general-purpose 400 HBW workhorse, below the harder Rockstar 500 sibling.
Chemical Composition
The table below shows typical maximum chemistry for the AR400 class. The mill test certificate shipped with each plate lists the exact heat chemistry and carbon equivalent (CEV).
| Element | Symbol | Indicative AR400-class (wt %, max unless noted) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | ~0.23 |
| Silicon | Si | ~0.70 |
| Manganese | Mn | ~1.70 |
| Phosphorus | P | ≤0.025 |
| Sulfur | S | ≤0.010 |
| Chromium | Cr | ~1.00 |
| Nickel | Ni | ≤0.50 |
| Molybdenum | Mo | ~0.50 |
| Boron | B | ~0.005 |
| Iron | Fe | Balance |
Why Boron and the Q&T Route
The small boron addition, just a few thousandths of a percent, sharply increases hardenability. It lets the plate transform to martensite all the way through its thickness during quenching, not just at the surface. Chromium and molybdenum back up that through-hardness, and tempering relieves stress afterward, restoring enough toughness to resist cracking in service. The result is through-hardness via Q&T plus micro-boron: hardness you can count on as the plate wears down, not a thin case that disappears.

Equivalent and Comparable Grades
AR400-class wear plates get sorted by nominal Brinell hardness rather than any single public grade standard, so equivalence runs by hardness class, not UNS number. Rockstar 400 sits alongside these 400-Brinell class peers.
| Grade / brand | Class | Nominal hardness |
|---|---|---|
| Rockstar 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
| Hardox 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
| XAR 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
| Dillidur 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
| Raex 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
| Quard 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
| Abrazo 400 | AR400 | ~400 HBW |
These names refer to the same nominal-hardness wear class. They're cited here for cross-identification only, not to claim certified conformance to a proprietary grade specification.
Rockstar 400 vs Rockstar 500: Which Hardness to Choose
Use Rockstar 400 when fabrication and field welding matter, and ~400 HBW gives you the wear life you need. Step up to Rockstar 500 when abrasion, not fabrication, governs the part's life. A common spec error buyers make is ordering the harder 500 for a part that needs bending or welding on site. The 400 forms more easily and cracks less in those situations. Save the 500 for the highest-abrasion zones, where the longer wear life is worth the extra difficulty in forming and welding.
| Criterion | Rockstar 400 | Rockstar 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal hardness | ~400 HBW | ~500 HBW |
| Abrasion / wear life | Good (general purpose) | Higher (severe abrasion) |
| Formability / weldability | Better, bends and welds readily | Reduced, tighter limits |
| Choose when | Weldability and field forming matter | Abrasion governs service life |
Available Forms, Sizes and Thickness Ranges
Rockstar 400 comes as plate only. It's a hot-rolled, quenched-and-tempered wear plate, and you won't find it in sheet, coil or long forms. Every bit of stock sits ex-stock, ready for immediate dispatch, and it's all cut from genuine mill plate. Thickness, width and length availability shifts as stock moves, so get a quote for the exact size and condition you need.
| Parameter | Availability |
|---|---|
| Form | Plate only (quenched & tempered) |
| Thickness | RFQ, ex-stock for immediate dispatch |
| Width | RFQ, ex-stock for immediate dispatch |
| Length | RFQ, ex-stock for immediate dispatch |
Plate Weight and How to Calculate
Rockstar 400 matches carbon steel's density, 7.85 g/cm³, so plate weight comes out of the standard formula. Need a quick figure? Plug in the plate dimensions directly. For batch estimates, the site's weight calculator does the job, or walk through the step-by-step method in the guide on how to calculate steel plate weight.
Weight in kilograms equals thickness in millimeters times width in meters times length in meters times 7.85.
| Thickness (mm) | Width (m) | Length (m) | Weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1.5 | 3.0 | 353.3 |
| 20 | 2.0 | 6.0 | 1884.0 |
Fabrication: Welding, Cutting and Cold Forming
Welding: stick with low-hydrogen fillers, and control preheat and interpass temperature based on plate thickness and carbon equivalent. That's what keeps hydrogen cracking out of the heat-affected zone.
Cold forming: use a generous minimum bend radius, with the bend axis running transverse to the rolling direction. Harder plate demands a larger radius; that's the reason 400 forms more easily than 500.
Cutting: plasma and oxy-fuel both cut cleanly. When machining or drilling, though, plan around the hardness, since it cuts into tool life.
Heat treatment: the plate ships quenched and tempered. Don't reheat it above the tempering temperature, or you'll soften the wear surface.
Standards, Tolerances and Testing
AR400-class wear plate is defined by nominal hardness rather than a single public grade standard. Hardness is measured by the Brinell method to ASTM E10 / EN ISO 6506-1, dimensional and flatness tolerances follow EN 10029 for hot-rolled plate, and every plate ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate (MTC) stating heat chemistry and mechanical results, so full traceability is never in question. Third-party inspection can be arranged on request through TÜV SÜD, Bureau Veritas, DNV, SGS or ABS.
Applications of Rockstar 400
Mining and quarrying: dump-truck and tipper bodies, bucket and lip liners, and loader wear parts take a beating from sliding abrasion against rock and ore.
Crushing and screening: crusher liners, feeder pans and screen plates handle abrasive material under moderate impact.
Bulk material handling: chute liners, hopper and bin linings, conveyor skirting and transfer-point plates do their work in aggregate, cement and bulk-handling plants.
