A516 Grade 60 carbon steel plate
ASTM A516 Grade 60, UNS K02100, is a pressure-vessel-quality carbon steel plate, the lower-strength member of the A516 family that also includes Grade 55, Grade 65 and Grade 70. It is produced specifically for welded pressure vessels, storage tanks and process equipment where notch toughness at moderate to low service temperature matters more than peak tensile strength. Grade 60 is the same family of plate covered under ASME SA-516, the ASME-adopted equivalent of the ASTM specification used on most boiler and pressure vessel code work. Because Grade 60 carries a lower carbon and manganese ceiling than Grade 65 or Grade 70, it offers somewhat better inherent weldability and toughness at a correspondingly lower mechanical strength, which is why it is specified where code calculations do not need the higher strength tier.
A516 Gr 60 chemical composition
A516 Grade 60 is a carbon-manganese-silicon steel with phosphorus and sulfur held to low residual limits for pressure-vessel cleanliness. Typical heat composition is shown below; exact carbon and manganese limits vary slightly with plate thickness under ASTM A516, so always confirm against the mill test certificate for your specific plate.
| Element | Composition (percent) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.21 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.60 to 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.035 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.035 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.13 to 0.45 |
Mechanical properties
A516 Grade 60 sits below Grade 65 and Grade 70 on the strength ladder, with a correspondingly higher minimum elongation reflecting its better ductility.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | 415 to 550 MPa (60 to 80 ksi) |
| Yield strength (min) | 220 MPa (32 ksi) |
| Elongation in 8 in (203 mm), min | 21 percent |
| Elongation in 2 in (51 mm), min | 25 percent |
A516 Grade 60 vs Grade 70
Grade 60 and A516 Grade 70 are both pressure-vessel-quality plate under the same specification, so the choice between them comes down to the design calculation rather than the corrosion duty, since both grades resist the same environments. Grade 70 carries a higher minimum tensile strength, 485 to 620 MPa against Grade 60's 415 to 550 MPa, and a higher minimum yield at 260 MPa against Grade 60's 220 MPa, which lets a vessel designer use a thinner section for the same pressure rating. Grade 60 is specified where the code calculation does not need Grade 70's higher strength, or where the slightly better inherent toughness and weldability of the lower-carbon grade is preferred for a heavily welded fabrication. Most new pressure vessel work defaults to Grade 70 because it is more widely stocked and gives more design margin, but Grade 60 remains current in ASTM A516 and is specified on legacy designs and lower-pressure equipment.
Normalizing and testing
As-rolled A516 Grade 60 meets the base tensile and yield requirements, but normalizing, a heat treatment that refines the grain structure by heating above the transformation temperature and air cooling, improves notch toughness and is specified wherever the vessel will operate at reduced temperature. Where low-temperature impact performance is required by the design code, Charpy impact testing is called out at the design temperature rather than relying on as-rolled toughness alone. For sour service duty, Grade 60 plate can also be ordered NACE-HIC tested per NACE TM0284, confirming resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking, following the same logic applied to our NACE-HIC Grade 70 plate.
