Key Features of Stainless Steel 904L Sheets

Compared to grades like 316L, the stainless steel 904L sheet offers several superior characteristics, especially in environments with strong acids or chlorides.

Superior Corrosion Resistance: Although both grades provide good corrosion resistance SS 904L is superior to 316L in extremely aggressive conditions like exposure to strong acids (sulfuric, phosphoric) and chloride.
Low Carbon Content: Both 316L and 904L SS sheets are low-carbon alloys, but 904L’s low carbon content reduces the chances of intergranular corrosion even after welding.
Higher Alloying Elements: 904L stainless steel sheet contains more Nickel (up to 28%) and extra Copper (up to 2%) than 316L which does not contain Copper. It makes 904L more resistant to sulfuric acid and chloride-caused corrosion.
Increased Durability & Longevity: SS 904L sheets offer a longer service life in extreme environments where 316L may suffer from pitting and crevice corrosion over time.
Greater Temperature Resistance: Stainless steel sheet 904L works better at higher temperatures up to 1150°C, whereas 316L can withstand temperatures up to 870°C – 925°C.
Excellent Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking: 904L with its superior Nickel content, is much stronger in resistance against stress corrosion cracking compared to 316L, particularly in chlorine-rich or acid environments.

Compositions and Properties of SS 904L Sheets

SS 904L sheets have a well-balanced chemical composition that ensures excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. It is made up of nickel (23.0%–28.0%), chromium (19.0%–23.0%), molybdenum (4.0%–5.0%), and copper (1.0%–2.0%) with a very low carbon content (maximum 0.020%). The high nickel and molybdenum content improves the sheet resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environment whereas copper significantly improves resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents. Because of this composition, SS 904L sheets have a minimum yield strength of 220 MPa, tensile strength of 490 MPa, 35% elongation, and a maximum hardness of 90 HRB. These properties make Stainless Steel 904L sheets a dependable and versatile option for demanding industrial applications.
