Key Features of Stainless Steel 316L Sheet
- Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance: 316L shows much greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than 304 stainless steel due to the addition of 2-3% molybdenum. This makes it suitable for marine and chloride-rich environments.
- Low Carbon Content Advantage: In the 316L the L stands for low carbon content a maximum of 0.03%. This significantly reduces the chances of carbide precipitation during welding. A major advantage over 304 it contains a higher percentage of carbon.
- Superior Weldability: 316L is more suitable for welded applications since it retains its corrosion resistance when welded whereas 304 may maintain annealing after welding.
- Better High-Temperature Performance: Although 304 performs adequately in most environments, 316L is superior in high-temperature and more corrosive conditions, thus offering greater durability and strength.
- Service Life: In hostile environments the service life of 316L sheets is much more than that of 304, thereby lowering maintenance and replacement costs over time.
Composition and Properties of SS 316L Sheets
The composition of Stainless Steel 316L Sheet includes approximately 16-18% Chromium, 10-14% Nickel and 2-3% Molybdenum.It also contains a maximum of 0.03% Carbon, which enhances its corrosion resistance after welding.The combination of these factors offers better resistance to chlorides and acidic surroundings which makes 316L a very appropriate choice for marine and chemical uses. Its tensile strength is between 485 MPa and 620 MPa, with fine ductility and toughness even at low temperatures.
