Key Features of Stainless Steel 304L Sheet
- Lower Weld Carbon Interstitials than 304: The carbon content in a 304L stainless steel sheet is ≤0.03% and thus considerably lowers the possibility of intergranular corrosion following welding. This makes the material suitable for those applications where extensive welding is required and no annealing after welding is performed.
- Superior Resistance to Corrosion: Although both 304 and 304L exhibit remarkable resistance to corrosion the 304L is particularly more resistant in corrosive environments, especially in atmospheres rich in chlorides and marine conditions.
- Higher Resistance to Sensitization: Type 304 is more susceptible to sensitization (carbide precipitation) in the heat-affected zone than 304L which has a lower carbon content and therefore provides a longer service life.
- Superior Formability: In both grades, the sheets can be easily formed but 304L stainless steel sheet has higher ductility for better performance in difficult forming and deep drawing applications.
- Comparable Mechanical Strength: Although 304L has lower tensile strength than 304 it still satisfies the mechanical strength requirements for several structural and pressure applications.
Composition and Properties of Stainless Steel 304L Sheet
304L stainless steel sheet typically contains 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel, with a carbon content of ≤0.03%, manganese ≤2.0%, silicon ≤1.0%, phosphorus ≤0.045%, sulfur ≤0.03% and iron making up the balance. This precise composition enhances its resistance to oxidation, pitting and general corrosion. The low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation, making it perfect for welding without compromising corrosion resistance.
