Mechanical properties differ between Grade 60 and Grade 70. Grade 70 offers higher tensile and yield strength, while Grade 60 provides better elongation.
Normalising is not just for strength; it creates a homogenous pearlitic-ferritic microstructure. A uniform microstructure is critical to prevent ‘Hard Spots’ (exceeding 22 HRC), which are highly susceptible to sulphide stress cracking (SSC) in addition to HIC.

HIC testing checks the resistance of steel plates to Hydrogen Induced Cracking. The test follows NACE TM0284 / AMPP TM0284 and measures CLR, CTR, and CSR values. Plates that pass HIC testing are suitable for sour service environments containing wet H2S.
The chemistry is the same except that HIC tested plates have sulfur restricted to 0.010% max instead of the standard 0.035% limit. HIC plates also undergo additional testing per NACE TM0284. They carry a 15 to 30% price premium over standard A516 plates.
HIC tested plates are available in thicknesses from 6 mm to 150 mm (0.24 in. to 5.9 in.). Widths go up to 3,500 mm and lengths up to 12,000 mm.
